For many experienced fly fishers, the ability to tie flies and to fish go hand in hand. Even for the novice, with a little bit of practice and practical advice, the ability to tie simple but effective flies is only a short time away. The first step is to select the right equipment.
The most important tool of all is the vice. This fits on the tying bench and grips the hook firmly between metal jaws, allowing the tier enough room to tie the various materials.
At least one pair of sharp, fine-pointed scissors is needed both to prepare materials and to trim off any excess or wayward fibres.
